DAY 3

PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE

“I may come from nothing, but I will always find a way.”

PRINCE OF PROVIDENCE

The Concept.

When we began demoing for this album, we had a session scheduled with our buddy Kalen Orr. We were supposed to be working on a different track but Phil came in and said he’d just had an idea. That idea was the intro to “Prince.” He tapped out the exact drum pattern and intro riff from memory and then we continued to build on top of that.

The Arrangement.

After that first session, which was on Wednesday, October 3rd, we aptly titled the demo “Mean Girls.” Our original demo (which you can hear below) was very raw so we knew we still wanted to build on top of it. “Mean Girls’” original incarnation actually missed the first recording session that would ultimately become this album and we revisited it and added the parts that it needed almost a year later when we finally recorded it. Crazy to think now, but there was a point in time when this song was not meant to make the final album.

The Interview.

To the right (or below if you’re on mobile), check out a special livestream we did on the day of “Prince of Providence’s” release with our good buddy Mr. Kalen Orr who co-wrote the song with us! Lots of cool insight from one of our most trusted and frequent collaborators.

LYRICS

I have visions and they are guiding me (how dare you underestimate me)

If I’ve got nothing, then I know that there’s nothing to lose (all that I do will be your downfall)

You don’t think that I’m that strong cause I don’t ever stand too tall.

I want this, I’m not gonna wait any longer.

You’re so outspoken when I’m not around / can you hear me now?

I’m not gonna wait any longer

Do you think that I’m broken? Do you think that I’ve had enough?

I found my focus and I cannot wait any longer

I may come from nothing, but I will always find a way

I know I’ll hold on, I know I’ll survive (all that I do will be your downfall)

I doubt that you’ll see me, ohh (how dare you underestimate me)

but I’m gonna come for you (all that I do will be your downfall)

I found my focus, but I cannot wait any, no I cannot wait any longer

THE MAKING OF:

As I mentioned above, the original incarnation of “Prince,” when it was still a demo titled “Mean Girls," lacked some production elements that would eventually become our calling card on this album cycle. We decided to lean heavily into pop production elements such as pitched and formanted vocals along with some key sample based elements that we felt would help these songs stand out from the pack of other rock songs in the current marketplace. Check out a behind the scenes video in the studio which features some of these production elements that we added to “Prince.”

THE DEMO

As I’ve mentioned in the first two days of this journey, my approach to writing vocals is unique in that I approach melody and vowels first and foremost. The cool thing about this is that certain lyrics or phrases tend to survive the demo phase and help influence the final lyric.

“All that I do will be your downfall”

— Prince of Providence

The Music Video

Our vision for the video was to set up in one of our favorite spots to hang, Bishop Cidercade, and have a blast. We contacted the spot directly and they happily obliged, so we shot all night after closing one evening.

Travis Time.
